"Leaverite" - [LEE-vuh-rahyt] - noun.
Duluth Gabbro - from Point of Rocks, MN.
a slang term used by geologists, mineralogists, archaeologists, and amateur rock collectors to identify a specimen in the field that may look interesting but is actually not. Rocks identified as such are generally left where they were found, as there is no reason to attempt to remove them. The term 'leaverite' derives from the phrase 'leave it right there' (Garcia; Frank A. Garcia, Donald S. Miller (1998). Discovering Fossils. Stackpole Books. p. 30. ISBN 0-8117-2800-5). - Wikipedia.
Variation: any usually dark, fine-grained ugly rock. The hand specimen pictured to the left might be considered by many to be leaverite, but it's actually a specimen of the Duluth Gabbro, an interesting and lovable rock once you get to know it.
